The House Energy and Commerce Committee has responded to a “disturbing” FairWarning report on consumer safety, co-published with The American Prospect at the end of March, by calling on the acting head of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Ann Marie Buerkle, to disclose her contacts with business groups. The March 29 letter from committee chairman Frank Pallone, Jr, a New Jersey Democrat, and Jan Schakowsky, an Illinois Democrat who chairs its consumer protection subcommittee, asked Buerkle for copies of all communications with industry or voluntary standards groups regarding the establishment of federal product safety rules.
